...And The Winner Is...
An interesting and highly instructive number, from the House vote today on "therapeutic" stem cell research. (I use the quotation marks ironically -- the best pragmatic point being made by those opposing this initiative is that the word at very least implies, and more like promises, relief and cures for those suffering from various spinal cord traumas and other, rarer diseases. It, the research that is, does absolutely no such thing, and any doctor or politically motivated advocate who tries to tell you it does is flat-out f---ing spinning you like a yo-yo. It is a long freakin' way from isolated experiments on cells in a lab to rolled-out, mass production cures at your local hospital, with no guarantees at all that your body won't shut down like a car that's just driven into a creek once you get a needleful. Optimistic idiots once promised we'd be fossil fuel free if we only pursued Solar Energy, or Wind Energy, or Cow Shite Energy. They were all Liars.)
Anyhoo...take a look at the vote breakdown by party (courtesy House.Gov) and then hearken back to all the times you've heard, lately, what a dangerous jackbooted singleminded theocracy the U S Of A would become if those evil Republicans aren't stopped...
On the Elephant side: 50 votes in favor of research, and 180 against. 22% and 78%.
On the Donkey side: 187 votes in favor of research, and 14 against. 93% and 7%.
So you tell me: If you were looking for the political party that demonstrated a greater diversity of opinion on The Big Issues, which one would you choose?
I have said it before, and I'll say it again: The modern Democratic party ranks right up there -- no, DOWN there -- with the tinpot dictatorships of Zimbabwe, North Korea, and Iran when it comes to tolerating dissent in the ranks. You join the Demmies, you'd better start lifting weights with your right arm...because you're gonna be thrustin' it straight out and up at a 45 degree angle with palm outstretched and down, alot.
A lot.

I agree with you man...Right on point...Bradsblog
Re: your qualms about "'therapeutic' stem cell research," what is the difference between a somatic stem cell and one derived from a blastocyst?
If they're equivalent, what's the issue?
Your side loses a vote they should lose in a legislative chamber whose majority (Republicans) use party-line arm twisting without precedent and all of a sudden the Democrats are North Korea and Iran? What should they have done, voted against principle to make you feel better? Call a freakin waambulance.
One party had a dissention rate of 7%; the other had 22%. Call me crazy, but that doesn't strike me as a huge difference - and certainly not enough to invoke a Hitler reference.
Bill,
The difference between the two is this:
Somatic stem cells (also called adult stem cells) have been documented in low numbers in most, but not all, tissue types. They have been found, so far, only to produce a limited cell type. For instance, cord blood can is multipotent and can only produce cell blood cells and immune cells
Cells derived from the blastocyst are called embryonic stem cells because each of them can produce all cell types in the body not just a limited set. This is called totipotency.
In order to get adult stem cells I just need to, say, get some bone marrow. Embryonic cells on the other hand require that an egg be fertilized by sperm OR have a diploid nucleus put in place of its haploid nucelus and chemically stimulated.
Thanks, Jon for a distinction I'm already aware of. But, I'm always glad to see those who have a nuanced view of this debate.
I wanted to see how those against human embryonic stem cell research can claim that the use of somatic stem cells obviates the need for using cells derived from the blastocyst.
My best understanding of the current argument for the flexibility somatic stem cells is that there are a number of different types of them. (Fourteen? Something like that?) While each type is multipotent, as c57/b6 said, different somatic stem cell types are able to turn into different final (differentiated) cell types. The hematopoetic stem cells c57 mentions turn into the various types of blood cells; I don't know details on other types.
The flaw with somatic (adult) stem cells (ASCs) arises from the fact that if you want to produce a mature cell type that known ASCs can't produce, then you either have to discover a new type of ASC, or are out of luck. Embryonic stem cells (ESCs), in theory, can be stimulated to form almost any cell in the body, thus potentially overcoming this weakness. However, there are the obvious ethical issues, as well as problems with immune system rejection or tumorigenesis of the ESC-derived tissue.
Despite the lesser flexibility of ASCs, there are already many widely used ASC therapies, with bone marrow transplantation as part of a cure for leukemia being one of the most well-known. To the best of my knowledge, no ESC therapies have been developed, due to the rejection and tumorigenesis issues, as well as difficulties in controlling the final form of the ESCs.
So: ESCs - as a single cell type, more potential utility but far harder to control. ASCs - each cell type has lesser potential utility than ESCs but is far easier to control, and with multiple cell types available a wide range of therapies can be developed.
Sorry for the long comment... hope this is helpful. :-)
78% to 22% is not a 50-50 split, that's true. But it is 1/4-3/4, which, in terms of people's holding different opinions, seems to me to be a lot better than the about 1/14-13/14 on the other side. To do the excessively simple math.
Which one qualifies as the "party of the big tent"? I'll leave that math to you, angry engineer (though I'd tend to agree that the H-word shouldn't be invoked for so little cause)... And as to the "party-line arm twisting without precedent," amovar, apparently it doesn't work all that well, again based on the same numbers.
What a stupid, STUPID argument. Stem cell research is common sense and a mainstream idea...therefore the common sense mainstream party of the Democrats voted for science and progress.
The GOP however is stuck in its primitive selfish backwards ways.
If you OPPOSE science and progress, you are a radical fringe dead-ender, and deserve extinction.
Well John that is an unhelpful comment, but it is funny. Its funny because when it comes to GM foods (both plant and animal) the Left is often the ones who "OPPOSE science and progress" so would you agree they too deserve extinction?
